From the Thompson Chain Concordance
G5590. psuche, psoo-khay'; from G5594; breath, i.e. (by impl.) spirit, abstr. or concr. (the animal sentient principle only; thus distinguished on the one hand from G4151, which is the rational and immortal soul; and on the other from G2222, which is mere vitality, even of plants: these terms thus exactly correspond respectively to the Heb. H5315, H7307 and H2416):--heart (+ -ily), life, mind, soul, + us, + you.
In most teachings on the soul authors go into the depth of explaining how the soul is made up of the will, mind and emotions. Within their study they will get into complex explanations of the inter workings of each of the souls parts.
As with the other three parts of our selves mentioned in Mark 12:30 and Luke , I want to give you scriptures that will help you understand how to love the Lord with all your soul as a individual and separate part all other part of our total being.
The soul, is more complex to understand than the other three parts mention. So I will, in my opinion, break it down to what I believe for my life personally, is the most important way, or thing that I do to love the Lord my God with all my Soul.
God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit are one, just as God wants us to be one with Him by taking our place as part of the body of Christ. Jesus said He did nothing without the Father. We are to do all we do based on God’s will. Not our own will. The creative power of the soul originally was so the power of God would flow out through His creation and the soul of each individual would be a out flow of God’s own being, just as the life of Jesus was. Although the knowledge and ability is all from God, everything created by man on this earth is a out flow of his own being. The ability to create is from God, but the will to create the things that have been created are mostly that of man, for mans own purposes. For Christians, there is nothing here on this earth for us, the earth is only a proving ground for us to show God that we will live and act as Jesus did,Lord not my will, but your will be done. I wonder what the focus of our lives would be if we were living out God’s focus on this earth. What is God’s focus. We must study every word and every action that Jesus took on this earth and then say to God, I deny my self, my will, my wants and my desires and Lord I choose to take up my cross and follow Jesus, it is no longer I who live but Jesus who lives in me.
Before we start this study of the soul, I want us to read two separate groups of scriptures that I personally believe;
(Gen 11:3 NASB)
(3) And they said to one another, "Come, let us make bricks and burn them thoroughly." And they used brick for stone, and they used tar for mortar. (4) And they said, "Come, let us build for ourselves a city, and a tower whose top will reach into heaven, and let us make for ourselves a name; lest we be scattered abroad over the face of the whole earth." (5) And the LORD came down to see the city and the tower which the sons of men had built. (6) And the LORD said, "Behold, they are one people, and they all have the same language. And this is what they began to do, and now nothing which they purpose to do will be impossible for them. (7) "Come, let Us go down and there confuse their language, that they may not understand one another's speech."
This translation says "And this is what they began to do, and now nothing which they purpose to do will be impossible for them." I believe that God was very serious with this statement. God created man in His Own Image and Likeness. Within man is the God like power to create. Through mans own ignorance as he walks in the flesh, God has limited his ability to tape in to this power. God has only allowed man to use this power to serve God’s final purposes on this earth. When Jesus came to the earth, He came to give man the right to reestablish this God given power.
(Mark 11:22 NKJV)
(22) So Jesus answered and said to them, "Have faith in God. (23) "For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, 'Be removed and be cast into the sea,' and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says. (24) "Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them.
This power is available on the earth today within man. God through his eternal wisdom, has limited mans use of this power. This power is available in unlimited proportion to the members of the body of Christ now, if and only if it is no longer I who live, but Christ who live within me. So the things that I will to do will be that of the father.
(John 15:7 – 10 NKJV)
(7) "If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you. (8) "By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples. (9) "As the Father loved Me, I also have loved you; abide in My love. (10) "If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father's commandments and abide in His love.
(James 4:3 NKJV)
(3) You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures.
I believe this power is housed in the soul. Simple put, this creative power which comes from the likeness of God, gives an individual the ability to will to change reality, which would include ones on destiny. That is what happen to Adam in the the garden of Eden. He willfully chose to change his own destiny. This is what God was referring to when He said "And this is what they began to do, and now nothing which they purpose to do will be impossible for them."
I believe that this power is apart of the soul, or maybe is the soul. If so, within my soul is the power to create. I also believe within the soul is the power to willfully change my eternal existence. But God being God has chosen to give man only two option, heaven or hell. It is already set into motion by the Word Who is Jesus, and there is nothing any created being can now do to stop the final out come. It could have been stopped. That is what was meant by this scripture.
(1 Cor 2:6 NKJV)
(6) However, we speak wisdom among those who are Mature, yet not the wisdom of this age, nor of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing. (7) But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, the hidden wisdom which God ordained before the ages for our glory, (8) which none of the rulers of this age knew; for had they known, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. (9) But as it is written: "Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, Nor have entered into the heart of man The things which God has prepared for those who love Him." (10) But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God. (11) For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God.
But now for us that will love Him and surrender our all to Him, deny our selves on the this earth, take up our cross and follow Him, "Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, Nor have entered into the heart of man The things which God has prepared for those who love Him."
We are now going to look at the characteristics of the Soul.
The first thing we need to understand about the soul is that
Read the following scriptures and pay close attention to (Luke 12:19 –20 NKJV) and at what point the soul would be required of an individual. From all these scriptures, it seem clear to me that at the death of the body, the soul will be destroyed, if the spirit of an individual has not been born again.
(Mat 10:28 NKJV)
"And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.
(Mat 16:26 NKJV)
"For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?
(Luke 12:19 –20 NKJV)
(19 'And I will say to my soul, "Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years; take your ease; eat, drink, and be merry."' (20) "But God said to him, 'Fool! This night your soul will be required of you; then whose will those things be which you have provided?'
(Acts 3:23 KJV)
And it shall come to pass, that every soul, which will not hear that prophet, shall be destroyed from among the people.
(James 5:20 NKJV)
let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save a soul from death and cover a multitude of sins.
The second think that we should understand is at the new birth,
(((((((Want some heavenly treasure, turn a few sinner from the error of their ways.
I promise it will be worth more to you than anything or all the things
that you will or ever could possess on this earth, a million million times over.
Want to really bless your family with a wonderful eternal experience,
get to the point with your family that you go shopping
for a few souls every week. Go on vacation for the purpose of
collecting a few dozen or maybe even a few hundred souls for God.
The eternal pleasure your family will receive will make 6 flags of D land or D world
look like, well how could I even compare those to the value of
EVEN ONE SOUL.)))))))
Now back to our scriptures
(Heb 10:39 NKJV) But we are not of those who draw back to perdition, but of those who believe to the saving of the soul.
(James 1:21 NKJV) Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.
(James 5:20 NKJV) let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save a soul from death and cover a multitude of sins.
(1 Pet 1:9 NKJV) receiving the end of your faith; the salvation of your souls.
Now I want to look at the scriptures that lead me to believe that the will which includes the power to create or change ones destiny is a part of the soul or is the soul.
Just as Adam, it was possible for Jesus to fail. To fail I mean to disobey the will of the Father. If Jesus would have failed, the whole plan of redemption would have be spoiled. In the following scriptures, Jesus said that His soul was exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. In the very next breath, Jesus say, Father, not as I will, but as you will. It seems to me, at this point in Jesus’ life, He is saying, if I do my will instead of the Father’s, it will cause the death of My soul. The only thing that I really want to point out or get from this scripture for our study, is Jesus is saying that if He does His will instead of the Father’s will, it would change His eternal destiny. Here in lye the power of the soul.
When we are saved, born again, recreated we are saying to God, Father God, Not My Will, But Your Will, Be Done With My Life. From that point on in your life you are making the power that is in your soul subject to God. He will forever have the final say so with all that you choose to use the soul for. He has no desire for another Lucifer or Adam experience. The only soul experiences that God is interested in is the one that follows.
The reason for our time on this earth and the things that we experience on the earth is for us to prove to God that we will make the same choices that Jesus made here in the garden of Gethsemane. For those that make the choice to give up all to God,
(1 Cor 2:9 NKJV)
But as it is written: "Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, Nor have entered into the heart of man The things which God has prepared for those who love Him."
It is our choice to make the same decision that Jesus Did.
NOT MY WILL BE DONE,
BUT YOUR WILL BE DONE
(John 12:27 NKJV) "Now My soul is troubled, and what shall I say? 'Father, save Me from this hour'? But for this purpose I came to this hour.
(Mat 26:38 – 39 NKJV)
(38) Then He said to them, "My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay here and watch with Me." (39) He went a little farther and fell on His face, and prayed, saying, "O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will."
Jesus paid a very big price for our redemption, to make us a part of His Body. Probably much more than we will understand until we are with Him in heaven. How little does He ask in asking us to give all to Him, His Body during the time we are on this earth. Individualism is out in the New Testament. If you allow yourself to be valued above any other part of the Body of Christ, you have missed the purpose of the crucifixion of Christ
This is not about us, it is about Him.
The crucifixion is where the final battle for all eternity was fought and won. Jesus determined within Him self that He would do the Fathers will at all cost, He would give up all that He knew and Loved, the place and relationship that He held with the father. He gave up all to take the sins of the world untoHim self. At this point He was no longer a Capital Letter, any thing special. He was an individual that chose to be a spirit, a soul, a mind and a body filled with sin. He was then forsaken by God, separated from God, for the payment of my sin and your sin.
Read the following scripture and you will see where His hope lay in His choice to give up all for God
(Acts 2:25 – 35 NKJV)
(25) "For David says concerning Him: 'I foresaw the LORD always before my face, For He is at my right hand, that I may not be shaken. (26) Therefore my heart rejoiced, and my tongue was glad; Moreover my flesh also will rest in hope.
(27) For You will not leave my soul in Hades, Nor will You allow Your Holy One to see corruption. (28) You have made known to me the ways of life; You will make me full of joy in Your presence.' (29) "Men and brethren, let me speak freely to you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. (30) "Therefore, being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that of the fruit of his body, according to the flesh, He would raise up the Christ to sit on his throne, (31) "he, foreseeing this, spoke concerning the resurrection of the Christ, that His soul was not left in Hades (HELL), nor did His flesh see corruption. (32) "This Jesus God has raised up, of which we are all witnesses. (33) "Therefore being exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He poured out this which you now see and hear. (34) "For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he says himself: 'The LORD said to my Lord, "Sit at My right hand,
(Acts 2:35 NKJV) Till I make Your enemies Your footstool."'
The power for Jesus to change his own destiny lay in his struggle in the garden ofGethsemane.
"My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death.
nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will."
Jesus chose to not do His will but do it God’s will, to do God's will which was written in the Word.
In doing so He submitted His Soul or will to God,
So "that His soul was not left in Hades (HELL),
nor did His flesh see corruption."
Therefore my soul will not have be destroyed in Hades or Hell
And my flesh would not have to see corruption.
If I will submit my will to the Father.
in Loving the Lord our God with all our souls
I choose to submit my soul, my will to do the Fathers will for all eternity.
I chose to take the time to study the Word so that I may know the Word.
In knowing the Word I will chose to always do the Fathers will and not my will,
therein I LOVE THE LORD GOD WITH ALL MY SOUL.
There is much that goes into the daily choice to sanctify or separate our souls to do the will of the Father and not our own will. Through the power that is within the Word we can make the choices. God understands the struggle and within the Word He has given us our answers.
The next scripture that lead me to believe that the soul possess the power that we have mentioned is (Luke 16:19 - 31NKJV). Read this scripture slowly and look for the details of where each of these individuals are after there death. Listen to what they say or what they are feeling. Before you start I would insert that I do not believe this to be a made up store because Jesus says there was a certain rich man and He calls the man laid at the gate by name, Lazarus.
(Luke 16:19 - 31NKJV)
19 "There was a certain rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and fared sumptuously every day. 20 "But there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, full of sores, who was laid at his gate, 21 "desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table. Moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. 22 "So it was that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels to Abraham's bosom. The rich man also died and was buried. 23 "And being in torments in Hades, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. 24 "Then he cried and said, 'Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.' 25 "But Abraham said, 'Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things; but now he is comforted and you are tormented. 26 'And besides all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed, so that those who want to pass from here to you cannot, nor can those from there pass to us.'
27 "Then he said, 'I beg you therefore, father, that you would send him to my father's house, 28 'for I have five brothers, that he may testify to them, lest they also come to this place of torment.' 29 "Abraham said to him, 'They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.' 30 "And he said, 'No, father Abraham; but if one goes to them from the dead, they will repent.' 31 "But he said to him, 'If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded though one rise from the dead.'"
I want to concentrate on what we know about the rich man based on this scripture and the previous scriptures we have studied about the soul up to now.
So from our scripture, Mark 12:30, what is left?
Where is the soul
Within the soul lies the power to change ones destiny.
You can willfully at any point while you are on earth choose to say to God,
NOT MY WILL BE DONE,
BUT YOUR WILL BE DONE IN MY LIFE.
At the point you walk through the gates of hell you lose the right to ever change anything forever, including where you will spend eternity,
it has be chosen for you!
The day we face the reality of hell
is the day that stuff on this earth will lose its value
and the value of saving the souls of man
will be the reason for our existence.
Does this sound a little like what Christ is like?
Read the following scriptures concerning the soul and you will find God’s understanding and His Help
(Note; when the word soul is place in ( ) after a word, this means that in the original language the word was Soul)
God Has A Soul, and within His soul is a purpose for your life. Submit your soul to God and His purpose for your life will be revealed.
(Luke 9:56 NKJV)
"For the Son of Man did not come to destroy men's lives(souls) but to save them." And they went to another village.
(Mat 12:18 NKJV)
"Behold! My Servant whom I have chosen, My Beloved in whom My soul is well pleased! I will put My Spirit upon Him, And He will declare justice to the Gentiles.
Our daily battle
(Heb 12:3 NKJV)
For consider Him who endured such hostility from sinners against Himself, lest you become weary and discouraged in your souls.
Not my will but yours Father
(Mat 10:39 NKJV)
"He who finds his (soul)life will lose it, and he who loses his (soul)life for
My sake will find it.
(Mat 16:25 NKJV)
"For whoever desires to save his (soul) life will lose it, but whoever loses his (Soul)life for My sake will find it.
Having a struggle with your own will, turn to Jesus.
(Mat 11:29 –30 NKJV)
(29) "Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. (30) "For My yoke is easy and My burden is light."
(1 Pet 2:25 NKJV)
For you were like sheep going astray, but have now returned to the
Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.
From within a surrendered soul will come much
praise and worship unto God
(Luke 1:46 – 47 NKJV)
(46) And Mary said: "My soul magnifies the Lord, (47) And my
spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior."
As God did with Jesus in the garden of Gethsemane, He sent an angel to strengthen His soul, He will do the same for you.
(Acts 14:22 NKJV)
strengthening the souls of the disciples, exhorting them to continue in the faith, and saying, "We must through many tribulations enter the kingdom of God."
Those That Surrender All And Continually (Psa 91:1 NKJV) ……."dwell in the secret place of the Most High Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty" and they shall Have Their Souls Anchored On The Solid Rock
(Heb 6:19 NKJV)
This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and which enters the Presence behind the veil,
If You Want Your Soul To Prosper, You Must Be Subject To
All Authority That Is Ordained By God.
(Rom 13:1 NKJV)
Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God.
(Heb 13:17 NKJV)
Obey those who rule over you, and be submissive, for they watch out for your souls, as those who must give account. Let them do so with joy and not with grief, for that would be unprofitable for you.
Complaining is not ever an option. The only option that God gives us is the Word. A good Word to use to replace complaining is one we offered in studying the mind.
(Phil 4:4 – 9 NKJV)
4 Rejoice in the Lordalways. Again I will say, rejoice! 5 Let your gentleness be known to all men. The Lord is at hand. 6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; 7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. 8 Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy; meditate on these things. 9 The things which you learned and received and heard and the God of peace will be with you.
Have you ever meditated on any of theWhatevers, on a good report , on virtue or on something praiseworthy, and then start complaining about it. If you have, well that’s stupid to even to suggest you have, and if you have, I hope you were alone.
When your soul prospers then God will allow the other important aspects of our lives the prosper. When we are doing our part within the body, when we are, God centered and others centered, then, Oh then, hold on for the experience of your life.
(3 John 1:2 NKJV)
Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as
your soul prospers.
You may know someone who confesses to be a Christian an is prosperous, and yet they are not having the spiritual experience of an anointing from God to do His will. If a person is living under the anointing, you will see a denying of self, which will show up as self sacrifice to do His Work and His Will. This person walking under the anointing will be sacrificing self, time and money for the cause of Jesus Christ. Under the anointing of God a person will be God-centered the well being of the body of Christ-Centered, and the lost and dying world or others-centered. If this is not the focus of any persons life, rich or poor, he does not have the anointing of the Lord and is not loving the Lord God with all his being.
The day be see the truth from God by receiving the Rhema of the word, the importance of the things of this world will change drastically. We are a soldier of Christ here to battle. We are"sojourners and pilgrims" and we will not be entangled with the affairs of this life.
(1 Pet 2:11 NKJV)
Beloved, I beg you as sojourners and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts
which war against the soul,
(2 Tim 2:4 NKJV)
No one engaged in warfareentangles himself with the affairs of this life, that he may please him who enlisted him as a soldier.
When we willfully choose to make the change from a self-centered, world-centered and stuff-centered individual, to being God-centered, the well being of the body of Christ-Centered, and the lost and dying world or others-centered we truly understand what it means to lose our lives for the cause of Christ.
The suffering that we will face and endure will be made out the souls desire to be doing Gods good works.
(1 Pet 4:19 NKJV)
Therefore let those who suffer according to the will of God commit their souls to Him in doing good, as to a faithful Creator.
An individual that does not understand the act of loving the Lord our God with all his soul will never be fully free from the things of this world. Some form of the lust of the eyes, the lust of the flesh, the pride of life or greed will be apparent in his life. You have to willfully choose to love God with all your soul or you will remain a unstable soul that will not, on purpose, give up the things of this world to build a heavenly bank account.
(2 Pet 2:14 NKJV)
having eyes full of adultery and that cannot cease from sin, enticing unstable souls. They have a heart trained in covetous practices, and are accursed children.
